Soulja Boy - My City (SODMG, 2011)

The standout track from Dre’s recent 21 EP gets an accompanying music video. It takes place in Miami, which is most certainly not Soulja’s city, but I digress. Those rising synths are a staple of that region, at least. This is, once again, Soulja’s best attempt at creating a Dirty South version of Diddy-Dirty Money’s trademark sound from Last Train To Paris, and it’s a fantastic imitation. The video doesn’t feature nearly as much driving around as I pictured for it, but it does feature plenty of strippers, which is a first from what I recall for a Soulja video. Good to be 21, eh Dre?

On another note, Dre seems to be crediting himself as Lil’ Dre for this release. Make of that what you will, I know I’ll just choose to ignore it.

Soulja Boy - 21: EP (SODMG, 2011)
Soulja Boy’s second EP in the last few weeks dropped today, only a few days following Soulja Boy’s 21st birthday. It’s amazing to think that Soulja’s finally allowed to perform at clubs without an X written on his hand, and even more astounding that his music is just as juvenile and ignorant (in a good way) as it was when he was driving his first car. This is obviously a point of criticism for most, and I suppose it’s due, but the fact that Dre is still able to crank out so much finely-tuned pop rap at such an alarming rate still surprises me. On first listen, My City, which is essentially the follow up to Zan With That Lean Pt. II, is the highlight, a fluttering, auto-tuned adventure into the furthest of Soulja’s city with quiet storm elements. The banjo-sampling Country Boy is also worth noting. You can see tumble-weeds rolling when you listen to that shit.

ASAP Rocky - Peso (internet, 2011)

In the middle of the Purple Swag video, an oriental-sample dropped in as ASAP Rocky ET’d a bicycle down the streets of Harlem; that song was a chopped and screwed version of Peso, which has been floating around on the internet for awhile now. The OG track has finally surfaced, and can be found on ASAP’s very own site.

Peso is a continuation of of Clam Casino-orchestrated Wassup, and finds Rocky once again innovating with his unique hybrid, Trillwave I suppose, with a beat that sounds like RZA and Swishahouse’s Salih Williams came together to collaborate. Rocky spits some throwed bars before singing about his love of weed on the chorus. Live.Love.A$ap due in August.

ASAP Rocky - Purple Swag (Internet, 2011)

I first had the chance to listen to ASAP Rocky a year ago, on the track Been Around The World. The homie young Yams sent me a link, and asked for my opinion on it. I was impressed; to this day, I don’t know if I’ve received a link to a new rapper with more potential than Rocky. At the very least, on the East Coast, he is a glimmering beam of hope. While he obviously owes a lot to his Harlem predecessors Dipset, the city of Houston, and anything else related to the color purple (except maybe Prince? I’m sure there’s some Prince in him somewhere (||)), there is no denying that ASAP is a breath of fresh air. He combines all these elements to not only bring something new to the table, but also bring back a style of music that was in desperate need of a revival; one fellow Harlemites like Vado weren’t quite providing.

Also, thank God someone sampled Still Tippin’, that song is still some top 20 shit, but the last time I heard someone rap over any elements of that song Lupe Fiasco was trying to turn it into some type of conceptual mixtape track. This redeems that.

Spaceghostpurrp - My Enemie (NASA Records, 2011)

While we all continue to bask in the dark glory of Blvcklvnd Rvdix, Purrp quietly drops the first track from his next project, Blvck Mvrdxc. #Really

My Enemie (sic) features the best pure rapping Purrp’s done yet, proving that there’s more to his repoitoire than previously thought. As an ever evolving 20 year old rapper and producer, Purrp shares some great company with other rappers of his age range, but with little more than a low-quality audio recorder and a box full of Playa Fly tapes, Purrp is perhaps the most promising of them all.

Spaceghostpurrp - NASA: The Mixtape [REVIEW]

I wrote about Spaceghostpurrp’s NASA: The Mixtape over at No Jumper because I’ve been listening to it for the last 8 hours straight, and also because I really wanted to write about something I enjoyed again.

Team Panini - Shut Down

(Green Ova, 2011)

Where I’m from, being normal is an insult

The Green Ova DJ’s crew has gotten a lot of love and publicity lately, mainly for Main Attrakions and the solo work Squadda and Mondre have put out (as well as Shady Blaze’s work). It’s really great to see all the kids attached to the based movement getting shine, not because of their ties to the Based God, but because of the quality music they’re putting out that rides an entirely different wave. Now it’s only right that their own affiliates catch some of that shine.

Team Panini is a group from Belgium (NO! don’t you dare stop fucking reading) consisting of Lil Panini and Nag, who’re both swagged the fuck out and absolutely insane. Though I’ve never been a fan of accents, this shit is universal; both Panini and Nag go in over this stunning production, provided by a young producer named Cloos, and, ahem, shut shit down. Panini is especially sharp here, reminding me of a young Cage with slight (good) traces of nerdcore artist mc chris in his nasally tone.
