Buddy - Awesome Awesome (Mixtape, 2011)

So, this is what Pharrell has been up to? Buddy is a 17 year old native of Compton, and the latest receiver of great Neptunes beats. Pharrell is personally mentoring the kid, but does it show? A bit. Although Buddy isn’t as good a rapper as his elder (nor even close), he seems to be building his rapping style loosely around Pharrell’s own. He also really loves the cooking dance, as all young people from California do, but I seriously feel like he should be paying Lil B royalties here.

Buddy’s mixtape, Idle Time, will be dropping soon.

Terius Nash (feat. Pharrell) - Real (Self-released, 2011)

Terius Nash and Pharrell Williams are two of my favorite people no matter what alias they go under (though Sk8brd is an atrocious moniker, P). While reinspecting Dream’s 1977 (the mixtape he released under his government name, that flew mostly under the radar thanks to Frank Weekoceand). Though the tape isn’t Dream’s best effort overall (it is his most angst-driven), there’s some serious bangers on there. “Ghetto” maybe the most obvious choice (which is why it seems that Def Jam has chosen it as the promotional single for Dream’s upcoming album), and though that is a crazy track, “Real” is undoubtedly my favorite. Between Dream buying a house on his phone while taking a dump, to Pharrell’s incredible double-time flow, all the way down to the incomprehensible “rock out” guitar solo that serves as the outro. It all delivers, and I hope to hear more from these two on Dream’s Love IV.

Also, Pharrell is rapping reguarly, and excellently again. Time to retry that rapping career, P! I need an album that delivers on the promise of the In My Mind Prequel.

Inside Of Clouds

Here Is A Song By N*E*R*D Titled “Inside Of Clouds” From Their NOTHING Album. Tyler is Prolly One Of The Biggest N*E*R*D Fans ( since august 2002) And Decided To Swag This Song Out With A Verse. If You Go To Lyrics In iTunes, Tyler Has Added Them To This Song. Don’t Click This To Download.

I’ve known of Tyler’s deep infatuation with Pharrell (at one point, he mentioned that he could die happy if someone passed on his music to Mr. Williams), and I doubt OF would exist if it wasn’t for the Neptunes. Tyler’s verses on here compliment the production greatly (as you’d expect), and Pharrell’s chorus is as harmonous as it is on the OG version. Like I mentioned earlier today, Nothing is a really fucking good album, probably one of my favorite non-rap releases this year, and easily their best since In Search Of… I may review it at some point, but don’t hold your breath. I’m kinda saving the next review for Kanye’s album (or MellowHype; maybe Cudi).

N*E*R*D - Hypnotize U (Star Trak, 2010)

N.E.R.D.’s Nothing is really good, as far as N.E.R.D. albums go (it’s far strong than Fly Or Die and Seeing Sounds). This Daft Punk produced banger has picked up some steam lately, so it’s only right it gets an exceptionally steamy (ayo!) video featuring Skateboard P and a gang of sexy women staring blankly into the camera.

To this day, I wish for Pharrell to release an album full of nothing but raps about Bape, Ferrarris, and colorful polos with no R&B guests, and features coming exclusively from Clipse, Roscoe P. Coldchain, and Fam-Lay. That will never happen, at least not now; that train was missed when In My Mind came out (which I honestly don’t remember well beyond the mediocre singles and brilliant Raspy Shit). I know Pharrell’s true calling is producer, and his true passion is singing, but damn, I still listen to his rare guest verses in awe to this day, wishing he’d start genuinely rapping again.

Gucci Mane (feat. Pharrell & Nicki Minaj) - Haterade (1017 Brick Squad/Warner Bros, 2010)

So, the trap boys don’t like this, and neither do the okayplayers - does that leave an audience for Gucci’s new collaboration featuring Pharrell and Nicki Minaj? I think it does - a larger one overall, at that. Between this and It’s Alive, this is probably the most maturely orchestrated Gucci album to date, with a very grown Radric Davis in the drivers seat. Here Pharrell rides shotgun, providing the lush production and Lemonade-referencing chorus, while Nicki comes in with a rather forgettable guest verse considering her recent scene-stealing endeavors. This song is a little hard to comprehend at first - it seems like more of a Pharrell song until you get to Gucci’s second verse, which takes this into great territory. The length of the song is perfect, and this is easily one of my favorite Pharrell productions in quite a long time. I think that Pharrell’s sonically dynamic/grown production is perfect for Gucci’s sensitive side, and I’m hoping that these two’s connection can get a Gucci x Clipse song here soon.

I would’ve liked to wait until the album released to here this, as it was one of my most anticipated tracks, but I couldn’t resist; and I’m quite glad I didn’t. In the context of the album, I don’t know how well this will fit; as a single song, it’s a perfect exercise in two worlds meeting and creating something brilliant out of the equation.
