Robb Bank$ – Counting (Youtube, 2012)

If there’s one trend that doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon, it’s young peoples’ yearning to revive music that was popular before they graduated elementary school. This is perfectly exemplified in the uprising of “trillwave”, a micro-genre of sorts that has been popularized by ASAP Rocky and Spaceghostpurrp in the last year. This obsession with reviving sounds that have laid dormant for years – decades, in some cases – has been successful in getting its disciples noticed, but has resulted in mostly mixed results musically. The cream of the crop manage to take the styles their predecessors employed, and update it for their generation to relate to. The rest – well, they’ve mostly been bland rappers spitting over 8Ball & MJG loops, chopping and screwing their voices more and more frequently in hopes of being listenable.

The well has been running dry since LiveLoveA$AP dropped last year, with many immitators following in Rocky’s footsteps. Upon first inspection, south Florida representative Robb Bank$ seems like yet another wave-rider. He raps over Clams Casino (not an original production, but Clams’ Rainforest single, “Gorilla”) and employs the same calm demeanor that Rocky does. The video for “Counting” is shot in a manner eerily reminiscent of Rocky’s “Peso” (though a young Mick Foley with a grill does open the video in a ridiculous manner), and Robb’s first verse focuses on little more than your bitch and snapping pictures of her. Then around the 1:20 mark, something happens. Robb drops a small gem about searching through his phone for nude photos of an ex, photos he’s certain have been deleted. There is some humility expressed within the following bars, and Robb becomes less of invincible player so many of his peers portray, becoming the sympathetic protagonist you want to root for.

Soulja Boy - White Lights (SODMG, 2012)

easily the best Soulja Boy song in this young year (which has already seen two Soulja Boy tapes, no less). Clams Casino produced it, and Soulja rides the beat well. I hope this means that Clams and Soulja are about to start working together semi-reguarly again, but I’m not gonna hold my breath. For now, this is sufficient enough.

ASAP Rocky - Wassup (A$AP/Sony, 2011/12)

Rottweilers are my favorite breed of dog. I enjoy this video.

Best Of Q2

The second quarter is over, which means we’re half way through the year. 2011 has been a great year for rap, despite the fact that the album format is little more than a distant memory. It’ll be interesting to see what the rest of the year holds for us.

No Jumper: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…

but we don’t have no off-days!

The homies Maxwell Cavaseno and Matt Goodman hooked us up on this Saturday afternoon with some amazing contributions. Two MORE new interviews, Max’s with Clams Casino and Matt’s with the legendary Big Boi, as well as Max’s review of Soulja Boy’s newest tape, Juice. This shit is huge. I told you this was a movement, and you’re all just as responsible for it as anyone. Just wait till you see the places we’ll go.

Lil B - Illusions Of Grandeur (Remix) (based, 2011)

Lil B’s Illusion Of GRANGER was released yesterday on XXLMag.com with little to no hype proceeding it, then took over my timeline for a good three-to-four hours, with some mentions still being made to it now. Very similar to his Red Flame mixtapes stylistically - mostly consisting of lo-fi boom-bap with extravagent left-field samples - Illusions of Grandeur seems far more focused that those tapes, although suffering from some of the same flaws, those being the poor mixing of the audio quality and lack of mastering (Lil B states in the liner notes that he acknowledges these problems, but that he wants us to ignore those faults and focus on the overall package - after thanking us for our continued support). Grandeur gets its boost from have a loose concept - that being of, no surprise here, Illusions of Grandeur. Although most would identify that phrase with a thirst for power, or a more illustrious future, Lil B’s illusions of grandeur mostly focus on his positive, worldly vibes and his triumpth over the negative shortcomings he’s faced in his life.

Illusions of Grandeur was originally the strongest track found on Red Flame: Devil Music Edition, and it serves (appropriately) as the intro and title track here. Just as heartwrenching and melancholic is its remix; more correctly labeled as a reimagining, as it features an entirely new beat and even more regretful verses laced with pain from B as he reminisces on his days as a thief. The entire mixtape, behind the boards, serves for me as a list of producers that read this site as well as fuck with me on Twitter; Georgio MoMurda produces Who You Love, Clams Casino produces Live From Da Hood, Keyboard Kid produced something I haven’t pin-pointed yet, and the producer I have the closest connection with, Beautiful Lou, provided this somber, codeine-drenched banger for B to let loose of soul on. I’ve heard this beat before in a different context - on Yachtsmen’s Promptly, previously reviewed here on YAYODANCING, but B does it great justice here with his darkly-twisted recounts of his past-life. They proved they had great chemistry on Cocaine last year, but here, B’s #based flow and Lou’s lean-inspired gothic stomp provide a song with great potency.

You can grab Lil B’s Illusions of Grandeur here, and while you’re out it, check out the Yachtsmen x Beautiful Lou EP here, entirely produced by Lou. Also, be on the lookout for Lou’s first solo outing, Beautiful Lou Thinks You’re Beautiful Too, very soon, possibly within the next week or so.
