Khalil Nova – Tha Black Layne Staley (Chopped & Screwed) (No Jumper, 2012)

Akumasanti chopped & screwed Khalil Nova’s Tha Black Layne Staley for our second premier of this mixtape. Definitely worth grabbing this today, as Nova’s space vortex-aesthetic sounds even more extraterrestrial when slowed to a crawl.

Drake & Slim K - Take Care: The Prelude (Chopped & Screwed) (datpiff, 2011)
There was a time where I would’ve been worried about including Drake’s music on this blog, because despite being a longtime fan (and writing about his music in this blog’s early incarnation - when no one read it), the readers I garnered never took kindly to young Aubrey. Nothing’s really changed about that except for the simple fact that I rarely contribute anything on the internet anymore, so I’m going off the notion that no one is paying attention.
Slim K is best known around our circles for his beautifully slowed renditions of ASAP Rocky’s leaked tracks. It seems only right that Slim would also be able to expertly screw Drake’s music, not only because Rocky will be on Drake’s forthcoming Club Paradise tour, but also due to both artists’ similar quiet storm aesthetics.
Dreams Money Can Buy was already melancholic before Slim got ahead of it, but with the tempo slowed to a snail’s pace, it takes on a new life of its own. The same can be said of Marvin’s Room and this tape’s highlight, Trust Issues, which strikes even more of the paranoid-laden notes it was attempting to reach than the original. Even Future, 2011’s MVP, has his hit single Tunney Muntannah get a new life breathed into it by Slim’s treatment. And Drake’s verse doesn’t sound as out of place here! (it’s still a pretty awkward place for a Drake verse, but it’s something, y’know?)

 yachtsmen - Promptly (internet, 2011)

I wrote up a long summary of this track and Lou’s glorious production, but for some reason, tumblr deleted it. Fuck Tumblr. Regardless, listen to this track; it’s melancholic, moody, based, screwed, and simply gorgeous in all its ways. I would offer more insight, but I’m not going to spend the next twenty minutes writing something so tumblr can throw it out of cyberspace.

OG Ron C & DJ Candlestick Present: Kendrick Lamar - O(verly) D(edicated) To Screw (Chopped Not Slopped, 2011)
OG Ron C already gave us two of our favorite 2010 albums in screw-form, with Flockaveli and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy; now he brings us another one with Kendrick Lamar’s OD. I’ve yet to listen to it, but Ron C, the founder of Swishahouse, doesn’t fuck around when it comes to this screwed shit. I’m just amazed that his taste in music is this superb; either that, or he keeps up with the internet like crazy. Probably both. Regardless of how Ron C came up with this project, get some more spins from Kendrick’s breakthrough album with this #rare and #secrete edition. I’mma just skip straight to Michael Jordan right off the bat, then rewind to everything else.
On a related TDE note, Schoolboy Q’s Setbacks is set to drop tomorrow, and from the sampler that was released towards the end of last week, it sounds extremely promising. Q’s impressed me on all his guest verses and Black Hippy verses thus far, and I’m excited to hear him in a solo surrounding. The production sounds just as varied (and banging) as it did on OD from what I’ve heard, so expect more trunk rattlers mixed with contemplative mantras.

Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (Chopped and Screwed) (youtube, 2008)

One of the better Youtube Screw-disciples, DJ Wrekk, chopped up hip-hop’s favorite Michael Jasckson song, and fittingly enough, makes it sound like Jacko is singing this from beyond the grave. The intro alone is enough to send chills down your spine; once MJ’s vocals kick in you’ll probably wonder what unknown realm you just stepped into. At one point Jacko’s signature hehe! finds itself slowed down, to the point that it sounds half demented circus clown/half Pillsbury Doughboy. It’s kinda great.

50 Cent - I’m Supposed To Die Tonight (Chopped & Screwed) (youtube, 2008)

I’ve been listening to The Massacre for most of the day, remembering how genuinely underrated this release was. One of my favorite songs from the project was always this Eminem-produced gem; if anyone knew how to ride a beat from Marshall, it’s Curtis. His sing-songy flow has always elevated the simple, but sinister militant-esque beats that Em produces. This is one of the most melancholic; the chopped and screwed treatment is perfect for the Z-Roisms found on this cut.

Domo Genesis (feat. Mike G) - Drunk (Chopped & Screwed) (youtube, 2010)

Surprisingly not chopped and screwed by the homie Mike G (who recently added me here on tumblr; swag me the fuck out!), Youtube syrup-drinker DJ Lean (original) gives Domo Genesis’ somber-cut from Rolling Papers the purple-treatment. Until something substantial drops again, I think I’m going to just keep answering questions (keep them coming, I enjoy answering them) and posting screwed versions of my favorite songs.

I don’t know what you heard about cash, but/my niggas get moneeeeeeeeeeeeey/I dunno what you heard about ass, but/Domo Genesis gets them honiiiiiieeeeees

Kanye West - Runaway (Chopped & Screwed) (youtube, 2010)

the homie Drobitusin (heh) makes Kanye’s newest single extra throwed. The keys in this song were just waiting to be screwed; I don’t think any version has met the full potential of screwing this song, but of the few (surpsingingly) I’ve found, this is the best. Am I the only person who still has this song on a constant rotation by the way? I suppose it’s obligatory for an asshole.
