KAP - #KAPfe (self-released, 2012)
KAP, who are really only known for their (or Lil G, more specifically) excellent collaboration with Chief Keef, “Tatted Like Amigos”, released their latest mixtape yesterday. As a group of three kids out of Atlanta, they sound inconspicuously like Travis Porter - one of the members ever bares an uncanny resemblance to Ali, and I’m almost entirely sure that is Ali’s twin brother or Ali himself under another pseudonym. Lil G is the clear stand-out of the group, as Not Ali and their chubby friend offer little that we’ve yet to hear, but Lil G’s Lil Mexico lingo and off-key sing-song almost takes this tape above the cusp of mediocrity (as it stands, it never truly ascends anywhere aside from “Amigos”).

2 Chainz - Like Me (internet, 2012)

2 Chainz enlisted the assistance of Chicago producer, Million $ Mano, for this Weeknd-sampling affair. Utilizing The Weeknd’s “The Birds, Pt. 1”, Mano creates a somber backdrop for 2 Chainz’ ever misogynist lyrics, as Abel heeds an unknown woman not to “fall in love with a nigga like me.” Though they don’t make the likeliest of pairings, both Weeknd and Tity work far better in execution due to the fact that both of them are, at the core, repulsive human beings. Though 2 Chainz never quite admits to this on the song, the fact that he chose such a self-loathing sample to identify with proves that 2 Chainz is more self-aware than his critics would have you believe.

Zone 6 Sinister – The Sixth Sense (D4L Records, 2012)

Zone 6 Sinister is a member of D4L records, and occasional Khalil Nova affiliate. Emerging from the notorious Eastside Zone 6 of Atlanta, Georgia, Zone 6 Sinister brings back a sound that’s been absent from Atlanta’s trap scene since the turn of the decade. One that Shawty Lo himself perfected on his only studio album, Units In The City. With a sound that’s reminiscent of L-O’s his own, but a sharper pen and a stronger ear for hooks, Zone 6 Sinister shines over a wide range of Zaytoven beats, as well as contributions from Lex Luger and other regional producers.

This is the same beat that Squadda B used on “The Greenova Way”. Ever the innovator.

Gucci Mane - 12 (Str8 Drop Records, 2001)

I’ll be writing about Gucci Mane’s career in-depth for a whole week sometime this year, and now I’m studying his earliest work, La Flare (his first mixtape from 2001) in preparation. It really is amazing how strong of a rapper he was in 2001, far better than he was in 2005, displaying all the tools that would lead to his legendary career span the next ten years. Even though the music isn’t quite there (despite the fact that an early Zaytoven seemingly contributes to La Flare in spots, especially on the catchy “Say Cheese”), this is a wonderful case study that was tragically overlooked during its re-release in 2010. Any fan of Gucci Mane should spend an afternoon with this piece of history.
